Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

75th Open Day

What an amazing day!

The rain stayed away (just) so we could celebrate 75 years of quality public education at Woronora River Public school on August 3rd. Students showcased music, drama and dance items which culminated in a whole school flashmob. Thank you to the past students, families, principals and staff who were able to attend. A special thank you to Mr Russell (Director Public Schools NSW) who spoke highly of our school during throughout the day. The staff would like to thank all the parents and community members who assisted us in presenting a wonderful event to our community. The dinner dance on Friday evening was well attended and everyone had an enjoyable evening dancing into the late hours.

We're Turning 75!

Our little school is turning 75 and we would love you to join in the celebrations!

An Open Day will be held on Thursday 3rd August in the grounds of the school to celebrate 75 years of Public Education at Woronora River Public School. Everyone is most welcome to wander the school grounds, visit classrooms and watch student performances from 10am. The original classroom which was opened in 1942 will be open for viewing. Displays of old photographs and memorabilia will also be on show. A number of souvenir items will be available for purchase on the day. Junior Dancers

Our Junior Dance Group performed brilliantly at The Seymour Centre, Chippendale in the Ultimo Dance Festival on Friday night. After their technical rehearsal during the day, the students were well prepared for their first public performance of their routine 'Summer Holiday'. Their routine was performed to loud cheers and applause from the audience.

A huge thank you to Miss Jess who choreographed the routine and to all the parents, grandparents and family friends who were in the audience supporting our dancers.

The program develops skills such as balance, coordination, hitting & striking, throwing, catching and cognitive learning. Compost Makeover

Years 3 and 4 have been learning how to compost effectively with Julie from The Royal National Park Environmental education Centre.

Students firstly sorted the current compost bins and removed all the plastic. There were 4 little red bins full of plastic! The plastic does not disintegrate so should not have been in our compost bin.

Students then started a new compost bin using the brown, green, water, water, water method. Straw, dirt, gravel, grass clippings, water, green waste, chopped up Crunch 'n Sip waste, molasses, worms, cow and sheep manure, clay and soil from our compost bin and from Julie's compost bin. All these things will help make our compost bins compost quickly.

Students planted nitrogen-rich plants from which they take leaves to add to the compost. These will help it compost. Students have to keep working on our compost bins to make nutrient-rich dirt to put onto our school gardens. Students had a great morning, some of them even worked through their lunch break to get it finished.

Before and After School Care is using the 2016 Chalk and Parent Direct toy catalogues to fundraise for the centre. The catalogues are filled with hundreds of great value, fun and educational toys perfect for birthday and Christmas presents.

By ordering toys from Chalk and Parent Direct, 20 cents of every dollar you spend will be donated back to Before and After School Care at Woronora River Public School.

Catalogues can be picked up from Jennie at Before and After School Care or alternatively contact WRPS office staff and the catalogues will be sent home with your child.

Students and their parents rotated through a variety of activities, learning a little about the scientific elements of each challenge along the way. Activities involved robots, engineering challenges and extracting DNA from strawberries.

Dancesport Challenge

Congratulations to the 18 students who represented Woronora River PS at the 2016 DanceSport Challenge at Homebush. It was the most amazing event to watch and our students did us proud. They were fantastic dancers but more importantly worked as a team to showcase the skills they had learned and how to interact with each other respectfully.

Alexi, Iyla, Jasper and Byron have written a reflection of their DanceSport experience:

DanceSport was such a wonderful experience and opportunity for us. In only 15 weeks we learnt five dances. They were the cha-cha, tango, salsa, jive and samba. In the beginning we were scared to touch each other but in the end we didn't mind. We tried our hardest on the night to do our best. Our tango finalists were Bridey and Harley. Our salsa finalists were Amy and Marcus. Our cha-cha finalists were Jasper and Iyla. Our jive finalists were Byron and Isabella. The placed we danced in was a huge arena. While we danced the crowd roared. It was very exciting.

Fathers' Day Breakfast

Woronora River PS celebrated our fathers and grandfathers through our Fathers' Day stall and breakfast. The children were delighted with their gift choices and very excited to take them home. Thank you to the volunteers who supported the P&C Fathers' Day stall.

Thank you also to all fathers and grandfathers who braved the rain to attend our White Ribbon Fathers' Day Breakfast on Friday morning. It was a fantastic morning and enjoyed by all who attended. Thank you to the teachers and mums who helped cook and serve breakfast.

Classroom Update - 3/4B

Students have been investigating how a magnetic force moves objects across difference surfaces, when they attract and when they repel. The students were amazed when they made magnets hover like magic over each other. The 3/4B scientists are currently designing and making magnetic games for a class Expo to be held on Tuesday 14^th June. It is vital that our young scientists develop skills in working scientifically and technologically; the completion of a science journal is great way to track these skills. These too will be on display at the Expo. We hope to see you there.

Do you have a child who turns five years of age before 31 July 2017 and will be ready to start school in 2017?

If so, now is the time to complete an Application for Enrolment by doing one of the following:

· Pick up an application form from the school office.

· Email the school at woronorari-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au to request a form.

Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival

Students from Woronora River PS will again be performing in the Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival this year in August at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre.

Our Junior and Senior Choirs will be performing alongside choirs from other local schools to form a mass choir for this amazing event. Both the Senior and Junior Dance Groups will be providing entertainment during the performances as well.

Schools Spectacular 2016

We are excited to announce that our audition for the 2016 Schools Spectacular has been successful.

Woronora River PS has been selected to perform in the Combined Dance section of this year's Schools Spectacular. The Schools Spectacular will be held at Qudos Arena at Sydney Olympic Park on Friday 25^th November and 26^th November.

Parents and community members are able to purchase tickets from the Ticketek website from Monday 16th May.

Welcome to School Picnic

It has been necessary to change the date of the Welcome to the School Year Picnic from Friday 21^stFebruary 2014 to Thursday 20^thFebruary 2014. The evening is to welcome all families to our school and to the new school year. It will begin at 5.30pm on the school oval. We welcome all members of our families including grandparents. Bring a picnic dinner, blanket, some fold up chairs and share some time with our wonderful Wonnie community. This is an informal evening, allowing some time for families to meet and spend time together. As the picnic is on school grounds, it is an alcohol free event. Unfortunately pets, despite being loved family members, cannot attend!

At 5.30pm KS and 4/5C parents will meet Mrs Simula and Miss Coggan. The Restorative Practice Information Session will be held at 6.15pm with parents from 1/2W, 2/3H and 5/6B meeting Mrs Webbey, Mrs Hitchenson and Mr Bennett at 7.00pm.

Carols by the River

On Sunday 4th December Carols by the River will be held beginning at 3.00pm at Prince Edward Park Woronora. There will be a sausage sizzle, rides, singing, dancing, bands and an appearance from Santa! All proceeds will go to Woronora River Public School. IMB Frogonora Vegetable Garden

On Wednesday October 19th students from all classes were involved in building a vegetable garden and planting seedlings with the help and guidance of staff from Bunnings Warehouse at Kirrawee. All funds have been provided by the IMB Building Society through a community grant of $3000. Students built possum protection cages for over the pots.

Club Kidpreneur Success

17 students who had been trained in an entrepreneurial skills, sold their products at the Artisans Market at the Eveleigh Carriageworks on Sunday. Their product, marketing and selling techniques were outstanding. Congratulations to all involved.
